Review

Set in 1912, just before the First World War, a celebratory dinner party soon becomes the scene of an interrogation when Inspector Goole calls at the home of the Birling family, investigating after the sad death of a young working-class lady.

We watch as more of the mystery unravels, highlighting some societal class differences between the Birling family and the young lady as it goes along. Each member of the family is questioned over their awareness of her and any potential involvement they may have had in her life.

Expect twists and turns, and to sit there contemplating about the repercussions of our actions in life during this incredibly thought-provoking show. I thought that Liam Brennan played the part of Inspector Goole effortlessly, balancing his role as an inspector with a natural human reaction to the circumstance and responses from the Birling family.

I also particularly enjoyed watching Evlyne Oyedokun play Sheila Birling, the daughter of the family. Her part was characterful and a little quirky at times, but certainly came back down to earth at key moments. I couldn’t end this write-up without noting that the set design was brilliant. I was blown away as soon as the curtain lifted and was truly wowed by the way the main house is represented.

Standout Quote or Moment: When the family collectively have a sudden realisation towards the end…
