City Girl Reviews: Land Girls Coffee
Coffee Delivered monthly to your door? Check! Supporting an independent, woman owned brand? Check! That brand is all about supporting other women farming across the globe? Check! A brand new company, launching it’s first two products- Fairtrade coffee- in October this year. The founder, Emma Brown has a clear mission- assist the women farmers who grow the beans to support their families in what is a male-dominated industry.*
Not only does this coffee check the box of women empowerment with every cup, it also tastes really good too. The warm and comforting aroma of fresh coffee hits you as soon as you open the bag. I love that the bag also has a built in seal so you can close it up and put it back on the shelf without rummaging for a clip or risking a rainfall on the counter top next time you open the cupboard.
They currently offer two different blends of coffee. Their Sumatran Coffee is described as ‘intense and great to start the day – it is earthy, dark and spicy with hints of citrus and apricot to add sweetness, making it full of flavour and creating the perfect balance.’ And oh man, can I confirm that this coffee is rocket fuel for the day. It’s rich, without being too bitter or overpowering.
The second offering is my favourite of the two, described as ‘A go to offering – with a smooth, round well balanced berry sweetness with a hint of coco its soft and easy to drink.’ This Peruvian Coffee and I have been attached to the hip since I received it in the post- who knew that berry sweetness with a hint of coco could actually be an accurate description of coffee!? It is fruity, light, and has got me through many afternoon slumps.
Set the scene: It’s my day off and the coffee is brewing in my new bamboo cafetiere (a Halloween present to myself in lieu of copious amounts of sweets and chocolate.) I click play on the High Low Podcast, and sit on the sofa with my feet up, watching the birds in the garden and a little squirrel I have nicknamed Fred come and go in search of food. I take my coffee with a splash of milk and slowly pour the coffee into my new mug and take a deep breath- this coffee actually smells incredible. Bliss.
Both can be bought as ground coffee or as whole beans, as one off bags- £8.95 (a great idea, to try before you commit to a subscription,) or as a monthly- £8- or twice monthly subscription delivery -£15. It would also make a fantastic Christmas present for your coffee loving friend, or family member. Subscriptions, after all, are the gift that keeps on giving! At only £8 a bag, you could get a 3 month subscription for £24- what is not to love about this!?
* According to the Office for National Statistic’s 2018 annual population survey, 16.9 per cent of farmers are female, with a total of 23,300 of women listing “farmer” as their occupation in 2018-19. That figure is up from seven per cent in 2007-8.
