Brighton-based band ĠENN (pronounced Jenn) released their new single 'Du Da Dance’ yesterday (27th of January) along with a music video and I’ve had it on repeat for the last hour.

These girls know how to make music. As a lover of rock, heavy guitar riffs, a strong base and a catchy tune, they are living up to their description of serving alternative madness with quirky twists and punk attitude, and this tune is safe on my shuffle list for a while.

Trans-national, the band is formed of three musicians from Malta, and one from the UK. With Leona Farrugia (vocals), Janelle Borg (guitar), Leanne Zammit (bass) and Sofia Rosa Cooper (drums) giving us a new anthem to rock out too and forget about the cold, grey, miserableness that seems to blanket the UK this time of year.

After releasing their debut album ‘Titty Monster’ in 2018, the ĠENN ladies performed across Europe and the UK, and were featured on KEXP, DIVA Magazine, Europavox, Tom Tom Magazine, and Louder Than War, amongst others.
They have recently been out supporting Acid Mothers Temple, PINS, Dream Nails, Hands Off Gretel as well as playing multiple showcases at The Alternative Escape (as part of The Great Escape) this year.

The new release Du Da Dance, out now via Everything Sucks Music, was written by lead vocalist Leona on the train in Madrid 10 minutes before demo-ing them! It speaks of “not caring about what other people think of you or say about you, and just enjoying life,” she says.  

There is something about the homemade, DIY music video, which is down to earth and not too… weird. There is nothing worse than ‘quirky’ bands being too much… but these girls know how to perform. I’m left wondering where my sunglasses are after watching the music video, and wondering that even though it feels nonchalantly cool, if it’s too weird to wear mine indoors tonight.

The unapologetic lyrics, confidence and sass is both empowering and motivating. It’s energy on a plate and I’m looking forward to following this band and seeing what else they’ve got.

So what is happening with the girls this year? Plans include singles for Independent Music week and for a tour across the UK and Europe! With the energy these girls bring to their performance, I’m expecting these nights to be thrumming with energy and electric!
