Girls Of Manchester: Emilia Kolbjørnsen

NAME: Emilia Kolbjørnsen

JOB TITLE: Marketing and Events Manager at Skylab / Community Manager for MG

When and Why did you make Manchester your home?

I did my Masters degree back in 2012, then moved to Norway and the UAE for work, I then moved back here in 2016, initially wanting to stay for one year, and I am now about to celebrate my third year here. Having now been fully absorbed into the Manchester Girl Community, meeting so many amazing women, it has made Manchester much more like a home and less like a temporary stop.

What makes Manchester special?

The size of the city, the multicultural offerings, the concerts, small coffe shops, the mix of old and new architecture, and most importantly the people. Northern love. Its also very easy to travel abroad from Manchester and I am not too far away from the mother land - Norway.

What drives you?

I’m on the Pursuit of Happiness, constantly finding new ways and “things” that bring happiness in my life. What also drives me is continuous learning. I am one of those people that needs to be continuously challenged, both on a personal and professional level.

What are your dreams/ where would you like to be in 5 years?

Hopefully happily settled down somewhere in this world with my own agency where I can unfold my entrepreneurial dreams and aspirations. I tried setting up my own company a few years ago, but wasn't able to dedicate it the time it deserved, but hopefully, once more settled, it will once again rise!

What is the biggest issue at the moment for women which needs to be talked more about?

The pay gap and female mental health issues. We need to get better at negotiating and sharpening our elbows. I work in the technology industry but I am one of 2 women in my office. Better representation, better pay and more support for mental health. You should be able to take a mental health day off like you are able to call in with a cold or the flu.

What is your favourite Manchester Girl Event and why?

It would have to be the drinks event! We have the privilege to work with some of the coolest clubs and venues in Manchester, allowing us to test out different places each month. It is also the event where I feel like the attendees are able to just be themselves, relax and chat over a drink. Its also known that alcohol is the “social lube” so it makes the networking less awkward.
