The Review

Fisherman’s Friends is a vivid and feel-good musical based on the true story of a group of Cornish fishermen becoming a chart-topping band and ending up performing on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury – expected by nobody, especially the fishermen.

The story starts with the everyday life within the Port Isaac community where the group of fishermen are singing their traditional sea shanties that have been sung for generations when they were disrupted by music manager from London.

As you would expect, both worlds and cultures collide when Danny (Jason Langley) senses great potential in the Shanty band and is eager for the group to take the next step towards a music career.

Fisherman’s Friends is all about community which is not only transported by the perfectly synchronized performance of the fishermen and their loved ones but also the incorporation of the musicians on stage who become part of the big town family. As an audience member you are swept along by the powerful performances which do not only spark adventurousness of discovering the world and potential opportunities but also convey empathy for individual’s struggles.

I can definitely recommend to watch this musical, even if you are not a huge fan of sea shanties. This musical obviously has folk music in various interpretations at its heart but is all about character development and caring for your loved ones.
