Review

Mary Poppins takes it place back on the Bristol Hippodrome stage after a 20 year hiatus and boy, was it worth the wait!

We are all well accustomed to the classic story of Mary Poppins that teaches us that even in the darkest of moments - as long as you are kind of heart then all will be well.

The revival of this production has reached epic new heights - without giving too much away - when does another production have a lead character tap dancing upside down on the archway of the top of the stage! The visual trickery used in this production is simply insane, and taken to dizzy new heights.. literally!

The show kicks off with Bert – played by Jack Chambers  – and cast introducing us to the Banks Family and their need for a new nanny, incomes Mary Poppins (played by Stephanie Jones) in a set posed the iconic house on Cherry Tree Lane coming forward and opening like a story book - no mean feat, and the set came together and moved around like a puzzle - perfection!

We were spoiled by sets designed so perfectly, going from deep grayscale to popping with colour, and as with more Disney productions of late - a tap dancing routine so divine - it will have you dancing in your seat!

Comedic timing was second to none, particularly noted with young Michael, played by Charlie Donald whose one liners got the audience giggling expertly.

Standout moments a-plenty, but a special shout to the ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocous’ scene which really captured the spellbinding magic that the ensemble really brought to this production.

Stefanie Jones was born to play the role of Mary Poppins - and let’s just say the whole audience sees her up close!

The show is running until the 30th November so grab your ticket soon!

Standout Quote or Moment: Mary Poppins final farewell

Similar Plays: My Fair Lady, The Wizard of Oz

See If: You have grown up with Mary Poppins or want to experience something practically perfect!

Last Impression: A fun and exciting musical which only enhanced the beloved movie.
