CGN Wardrobe Edit: February

City Girl Networks monthly fashion and beauty edit, curating some of our favourite products from the brands we love…

Fashion right now seems to consist of whether to follow the monochromatic theme for your loungewear or if bright, colourful mismatch of second hand, hand-knitted loungewear is your way to go. With fashion weeks this year looking as though they aren’t going to be going ahead, designers across the globe are finding new ways for us to engage with their collections- as our favourite Editor Miranda from the Devil Wears Prada aptly puts it, today’s runway collections will no doubt find their ways into highstreet shops by the end of the year.

If you follow fashion, these shows are the highlight of the fashion year, if you don’t… it’s a great excuse to sit back and watch couture gowns that we can dream of wearing to a modern-day Bridgerton ball, or raise our eyebrows up to casual T-shirt and bike short combos that ‘if you need to know the price of, you can’t afford.’

The outskirts of fashion are fluid- what colours are in season, which bag style, hair accessories or none, chunky gold jewellery or dainty rose gold? It’s easy to spot these changing trends, as they are what fast fashion giants jump on, plastering over the homepage of their online stores. Once you know what you’re looking at, it’s also easy to figure out which styles and shapes remain throughout the seasons as those basic staples.

We are in for at least another few months of lockdown, a perk- we have to try and find them where we can!- is that you can really focus on your wardrobe and work out your personal style.

If you haven’t already done a wardrobe purge, you should add that to your list of productive things to do one weekend. Don’t know where to start? Have a watch of these youtube videos (in this order) from TheNotoriusKIA on discovering your personal style and how to do a Wardrobe Spring Clearout

When you know what you’ve got, you know what you need (If anything!) I’ve rounded up the items I am loving this month, as well as a personal tip I use to get my energy up when I’m in a slump (and I know I’m not the only one running on low battery right now). The important thing right now is to focus on what feels good, what are you wearing that feels like a hug to yourself? That empowers you? Inspires you?

Depop jumper, £25

By far the best part of January so far was finding this grey, oversized jumper on Depop. It’s oversized, thick, warm and safe to say it’s been my go-to cosy wear item since it arrived. I wear it over leggings when I’m at home, or do a french tuck into jeans when I head out of the house. This jumper is from @beesam, they have lot’s of similar items, in lots of different sizes! I would recommend following them on Instagram too, for lot’s of behind the scenes of where they source their clothes.

The french tuck is the act of tucking a shirt or jumper, into the front of your trousers, to emphasize your waist and pull together your outfit, turning it from ‘I just threw this on’ to effortless ‘I just threw this on’- ladies, you know what I mean. With oversized jumpers, it also means your midriff where you do the tuck doesn’t get super bulky and uncomfortable.

Lounge trousers/Flare Pants, Free People £178

I have been trying. So. Hard. Not to include loungewear in these monthly edits this year- it’s February. Like my motivation, I’ve given up! There is absolutely no escaping loungewear, and even post-pandemic, I have a feeling that good looking, comfy loungewear trousers are going to be here to stay. I’d expect tailored fits and fabrics like satin and velvet to be the biggest hit when we return to normality due to their versatility of dressing up and down.

Invest now in some velvet trousers, so you can transition to night-outs or Sunday picnics without the need for another shopping trip. I love these Hendrix Flare Pants from Free People. Tight on the top like leggings, flaring out at the calf. Pair with a slouchy black t-shirt for the day time and a black crop top layered gold jewellery (see suggestion below!) with strappy kitten heels for a night out.

Merino Socks, Etsy £15.99

You’ll thank me later. Thick socks are a wardrobe staple when it’s this cold out! Keep your toes rosy warm during the day with thick socks, perfect for curling up on the sofa without the need to remove your slippers. These handmade knitted socks are made from Merino wool, so they need a little bit of extra care when it comes to washing and drying, but they are SO worth it. It looks like there aren’t many left, so grab a pair quickly before they sell out!

Wellies, Decathlon £10

Our daily walks are the only time we get to leave the house right now (for all our non-essential workers), and it’s been raining here in the U.K.- a lot. Walking boots are great, but wellies are where it’s at! Perfect for pairing with thick socks above to keep your toes toasty warm and dry when you’re going on your walks, it’s a great place in your outfit to express yourself. Go colourful, spotty, stripy, tie-dye, or keep it classic with a navy or khaki.

I have my eye on these purple easy slip on and off wellies from Decathlon, and at the price of £10, you really can’t go wrong- and definitely won’t feel guilty for getting them all muddied and scuffed up.

Harmony Necklace, Wolf and Gypsy: £80

Gold jewellery will always be a staple item for me, so Wolf & Gypsy’s collection was a fantastic find! Their pieces are designed for layering (you can choose what length to get the chain), and if you struggle to envisage what your completed set looks like, they have some layering looks already curated for you.

This necklace is the Harmony Necklace (let’s be honest, we could all use some harmony in our lives right now.) I was drawn to the beautiful symbolism, a hook for capturing and drawing out your problems, an umbrella for protection and a moon for peace. With four different chain lengths on offer, I’m planning on completing the layering effect with the moonstone necklace, clear crescent moon necklace, and the water element necklace.

Do you have a sister or soul sisters birthday coming up soon? This Two Sisters Coin necklace is considered to empower any woman that this pendant is gifted too. Or do you need to give your partner a nudge in the right direction for valentines day? (Forward this article on to them…)

PSA, if you have been forwarded on this article, and have yet to purchase a valentines present, you can’t go wrong with the following options:

Star Necklace, £35

Turquoise Gemstone Bangle. £65

Want a timeless, one of a kind, really special piece?

Vintage Element Bangle, £335

Don’t know what chain length to get? Measure their favourite necklace to see where they like their necklaces to sit. Don’t know what colour to get? Check their jewellery- do they wear more silver, or more gold?

Liquid Gold Tanning Foam, Bondi Sands: £14.99

The placebo effect that works wonders- sometimes a fake glow is all we need to put a pep in our step and create a real glow within ourselves! I love using Bondi Sands Liquid Gold Tanning Foam, it’s dark enough to make a difference, but not too dark that is obviously fake tan job. It also doesn’t need washing off- perfect for those low energy days. I apply this once a week if I have the motivation, once a fortnight at the least.

Make sure to prep properly! If you shave your legs do that the day before, and always moisturise your ankles, knees, elbows and wrists before applying it to make sure it doesn’t get too dark on those areas. Using a tanning mitt (hand one and a back one) also ensures smooth coverage.
