Foxtrot Oscar is a newly formed Ballroom and Latin American Dance collective, which aims to deconstruct the gender stereotypes that partner-style dancing is based on and has developed from. We aim to provide a safe and inclusive space for practising this art form, and an environment conducive to making new friends, particularly among young professionals in the capital who are often lacking such a community.
It is different from any other Ballroom and Latin American dance studio available given its particular focus on the woman’s perspective - whether that be deconstructing the idea that female latin dancers must wear heels and must follow the desires of their male partner; or changing cultural concepts whereby women feel as though they have to be asked to dance by a man at a social event before taking to the floor, and furthermore, not being able to say no if they do not wish to dance with that person. The name "Foxtrot Oscar" - meaning "F*** Off "in the phonetic alphabet - symbolises saying no to all the harmful gender stereotypes in modern-day Ballroom and Latin American dancing.
Our focus is on social events, community-building and shows, and the studio will not participate in competitive Ballroom circuits. We currently run weekly Beginner classes on a Thursday evening in Marleybone, central London, and run regular workshops at the weekends. We hope to add many more events/classes to our programme in the future. Everyone is welcome and classes are open to all.
