Curry Smugglers Mango Mirchi Review: The Alcohol-Free Beer We’d Bring To Sober October
We already knew we loved Curry Smugglers.
After trying their South Asian-inspired snacks earlier this year, they quickly became one of those brands we kept talking about afterwards. The cans looked great, the flavours were properly moreish and the Bombay Mix in particular became the kind of snack we wanted to bring out whenever people came round.
So when Curry Smugglers moved into beer, we were intrigued — especially when we saw they had launched an alcohol-free option just in time for Sober October.
The Margate-based brand, founded by husband-and-wife team Steve and Ruby Dass, has expanded from South Asian snacking into drinking culture with two new releases: DESI Lager, a 4.2% Basmati Rice Lager, and Mango Mirchi, an alcohol-free lager made with Alphonso mango and habanero chilli.
The Curry Smugglers beer range
Curry Smugglers has always felt like a brand with a clear personality, and the beers continue that.
The brightly coloured can designs instantly stand out. They feel fun, confident and modern, with the same energy we loved from the snack range. It makes sense as an evolution for the brand: bold packaging, South Asian-inspired flavours and products that feel made for sharing.
The DESI Lager is light, crisp and subtle, with a sweet, zesty edge. It is the kind of beer we can imagine working well with grilled fish, light vegetables or a sunny afternoon table. It is positive to see Curry Smugglers bringing its point of view into alcoholic beer too, especially with a Basmati Rice Lager inspired by India’s brewing heritage.
But for us, the real standout was Mango Mirchi.
Mango Mirchi Alcohol-Free Lager
Mango Mirchi was easily our favourite.
And for Sober October, it feels like exactly the kind of alcohol-free drink we want to see more of: something with flavour, personality and a reason to be chosen in its own right.
This is not an alcohol-free beer that feels like a watered-down version of something else. It has a proper flavour journey. You get the ripe mango first, bringing a bright, fruity sweetness, and then the habanero chilli warmth comes through afterwards.
The mango gives it that juicy, tropical feeling, but the chilli stops it from becoming too sweet. It gives the drink a gentle warmth and a little savoury edge, making it feel much more grown-up than a standard fruity soft drink.
It would be great with Curry Smugglers snacks, obviously, but it would also work well with spicy food, barbecue dishes, grilled halloumi, picnic food or anything that needs a refreshing drink with a bit of personality.
For anyone doing Sober October, cutting back on alcohol or just wanting a more interesting alcohol-free option, this is a really good one to have on the radar.
Should you buy Curry Smugglers Mango Mirchi?
Yes, especially if you are looking for a genuinely exciting alcohol-free beer.
Mango Mirchi was the standout for us. The blend of ripe mango and habanero chilli warmth makes it fruity, refreshing and just unusual enough to feel special.
Curry Smugglers also has its DESI Lager for those who do want an alcoholic option, but if you are doing Sober October or simply want something alcohol-free that still feels fun, Mango Mirchi is the one we would recommend first.
We already loved this brand, and this has only made us love them more.
