Hotel Review: Eccleston Square Hotel, London Belgravia

It will take you 4 and a half minutes to get to Eccleston Square Hotel from Victoria Station; one of London’s busiest train stations. It’s hard to believe that when you walk into the grade II listed townhouse on a polished Belgravia street and open your balcony door to overlook the private gardens opposite.

I spent one night there during a romantic mini-break, seeking the perfect balance of calm and London’s central hotspots. We wanted the rush of Zone 1 by day, and a tranquil night’s sleep by night. Frequent London flyers will know that this is a tough nut to crack – but they haven’t met Eccleston Square Hotel.

Set across two elegant Grade II-listed townhouses, this family-run boutique hotel offers something increasingly rare in central London: calm, space and a genuine sense of escape. It won’t take you long to start asking: “how is this still Zone 1?”.

The Location

Imagine stepping out of Victoria Station, leaving behind the noise of suitcases, buses and commuters, and turning into one of Belgravia’s quiet residential streets.

Within minutes, the pace changes. The pavements widen, white stucco townhouses line the road, and London starts to feel less like a city you’re rushing through and more like somewhere you can actually pause.

That is the charm of Eccleston Square Hotel.

The location is incredibly convenient, with Victoria Station less than a five-minute walk away, making it easy to reach by train, tube or coach. But despite being so close to one of the busiest transport hubs in the city, the hotel itself feels tucked away in a much calmer pocket of Belgravia.

This is the kind of London stay where you can be at Buckingham Palace, Westminster, Chelsea or the West End quickly, but return to somewhere that feels residential, elegant and surprisingly peaceful.

You are also close to Elizabeth Street and Eccleston Yards, two of Belgravia’s most charming areas for alfresco dining, independent shops, coffee stops and long summer evenings. It is a particularly lovely base if you want to enjoy London without spending the whole trip battling crowds.

But the real hidden luxury of the location is Eccleston Square Gardens.

Directly opposite the hotel, the private three-acre garden square is reserved for residents and hotel guests, making it feel like one of London’s best-kept secrets. In a city where every patch of grass is claimed the moment the sun comes out, having access to a peaceful, beautifully planted private garden feels incredibly special.

There are shaded lawns, quiet corners for reading, seasonal planting and even a private tennis court, which feels almost unbelievable in such a central location. Rom com fans among us will also be forgiven for imagining that Notting Hill scene in the private garden; yes, there are benches you can read on whilst someone lies on you (or vice versa).

The Hotel Experience

From the outside, Eccleston Square Hotel has all the elegance you would hope for from a Belgravia townhouse hotel: white stucco frontage, tall windows and a quiet, polished presence.

Inside, however, it is far more modern; living up to its status as a high-tech luxury hotel.

The hotel has built a reputation as one of Europe’s most technologically advanced boutique hotels. Rooms feature Apple TVs, Sonos soundbars, plus a highly effective air-conditioning and heating system, which is an absolute gift for London’s unpredictable weather temperatures.

For me, the standout feature has to be the handcrafted Hästens Swedish massage beds; is there anything more luxury than your bed evolving into an automated massage machine? My lower back has been calling out for it ever since.

Then there’s the quirk of the glass walls of the bathroom frosting up with the touch of a button, and a TV built into the glass above the toilet. That room had more buttons in it than my whole house.

The hotel felt a little more classic London Townhouse at breakfast, except for the giant screen projecting different scenes for us to look at. For those wondering, it’s a continental-only breakfast that’s simple and health-conscious. We both had a delicious Dorset granola with oat milk, and a filter coffee.

Top room tip: Stay in the Balcony King Room with a view of the park.

What To Do Nearby

The best thing about Ecclestone Square Hotel (massage beds aside) is that the location is so fantastic you can have any type of London escape you’d like.

You can spend the morning wandering through Elizabeth Street, stopping for coffee, browsing boutiques and admiring the kind of floral shopfronts that make this part of London feel so polished. Eccleston Yards is another lovely nearby spot for food, drinks and a slower-paced afternoon.

Alternatively, you can follow our sightseeing lead with hotspots like Westminster, Buckingham Palace, St James’s Park, Soho, Chelsea and the River Thames.

If you want to add something memorable to the trip, the Tower of London River Tour would pair beautifully with a stay here. The tour operates aboard Silver Raven, the UK’s first electric tour boat, offering a 40-minute live-guided journey along the Thames from Tower Bridge Quay to Westminster and back.

Rather than feeling like a standard tourist boat, it has been designed as a more refined cultural river experience, with live storytelling created in collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces. It is a lovely way to see London from the river, especially if you want something that feels scenic, relaxed and a little more special.

Why You Should Stay at Eccleston Square Hotel

As a London hotel, Eccleston Square Hotel has a lot going for it. It is central, elegant, well-connected and thoughtfully designed. But what makes it stand out is the feeling it gives you.

It feels calm while still being central: Being moments from Victoria Station is incredibly useful, but the hotel’s residential Belgravia setting makes it feel much more peaceful than many central London stays.

The private garden access is a huge summer bonus: Eccleston Square Gardens is the kind of hidden London luxury that makes a stay feel instantly more special. Having access to quiet green space in the middle of the city is rare, especially during summer.

The rooms are genuinely designed for rest: From Hästens Swedish massage beds to strong air-conditioning, Sonos soundbars and Apple TVs, the details are there to help you properly switch off.

It is a great grown-up city break hotel: As an adults-only spot, it is particularly well suited to couples, solo travellers and friends looking for a quieter, more design-led London stay.

Belgravia is a beautiful base: With Elizabeth Street, Eccleston Yards, Westminster, Chelsea and the Thames all within easy reach, you can shape the trip around food, culture, shopping, sightseeing or simply soaking up a more elegant side of London.

Final Thoughts

With access to a private garden square, balcony and patio rooms, clever in-room technology and one of the best locations for exploring Belgravia, Chelsea, Westminster and central London, Eccleston Square Hotel is a brilliant option for couples, solo travellers and grown-up city breaks.

It gives you the transport links and access of central London, but with the softness of a residential neighbourhood.

For a summer stay in London, especially as a couple or solo traveller, it is a very strong choice. You can spend your days exploring the capital, your evenings wandering through Belgravia, and your in-between moments escaping to a private garden square that most Londoners will never know exists.

I, for one, will be returning time and time again; especially for that massage bed.
