Five Things To Do In Bath This Autumn
As we say goodbye to glorious summer months there is something exciting about the first signs of autumn and the beginning of a new academic year (even if we have long since graduated!). Tempting as it is to hide under duvets and binge-watch the latest box set, why not embrace the season and have a look at what you can do in and around Bath this September and beyond.
What better way to spend a crisp autumnal day than walking through the varying shades of rust coloured trees at Westonbirt Arboretum? Admire the views of the arboretum from the treetop walkway or stroll through the Japanese maples which are at their best during the autumn months. There are also a variety of events on offer such as tree climbing, guided walks or the digital landscape course for those interested in photography. Most importantly, there is a cafe and gift shop overlooking the grounds for when you need a little break.
Whether you are a fan of Jane Austen or not it is a sight to see the parade of regency costume-wearing Austen fans walk through the streets of Bath. The festival runs from the 13th - 22nd of September and includes talks on theatre in Jane Austen’s time, tours of Beckford’s Tower and various dance workshops, all Jane Austen themed of course.
3. Ghost Walks
Why not get yourself in the mood for Halloween and spend a chilly night being spooked by going on one of Bath’s ghost walks? Not only will this tour give you insight into the mysterious happenings around this haunted city, but it will allow you to explore areas of Bath you may not have come across before. The tours are filled with interesting information on the history of ghostly sightings in the city. The walks take part every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from the Garricks Head.
One thing Bath is never short of: great places to eat! As convenient as it is to dine at a restaurant or shop at a supermarket, there is nothing more rewarding than buying local at a farmer’s market. The Bath Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday from 9am - 1:30pm under the shelter of what used to be Green Park station. Enjoy tasting samples from local cheesemongers, freshly baked bread or pizza from the Bath Pizza Company and expect a huge selection of stalls to buy from, all made or sourced nearby.
5. Sofar Sounds
Music lovers should definitely head to one of Sofar Sounds’ secret gigs in Bath. The intimate shows are held in venues across the city, the details of which are only revealed 24 hours before the event. Each gig showcases the talents of 3-4 music acts and you can usually bring your own drinks, a pillow to sit on and enjoy the night ahead.
It is a great opportunity to meet people who live locally and are also interested in good quality live music. There are two upcoming shows on the 26th of September and 31st of October.
