Girls Of Manchester: Katrine Lykke
NAME: Katrine Lykke
JOB TITLE: Graphic Designer
When and why did you make Manchester your home?
I moved to Manchester in September 2017 after having spent 5 years in Shanghai working for a Danish fashion company. I was at a point in my long distance relationship where we had to decide on a place to live together. After having visited Manchester several times, and being very interested in its music history, I knew it would be a cool city for me to live in and the decision was easy to make.
What makes Manchester special?
Before I knew much else about Manchester it was the music scene that caught my attention. Most of my favourite bands, specifically Joy Division, were either formed here or have some connection with Manchester. I later discovered all the art and creativity the city has to offer, but the thing that has impressed me the most is the acceptance of being who you are and at the same time a sense of ”being in it together”.
Another part of Manchester’s charm is that it’s a bit rough around the edges; there’s an underground and down to earth vibe that I feel a connection with.
What drives you?
Experiencing new things and exploring new opportunities. Pushing myself out of my comfort zone inspires me. It’s important to me to continue to grow and develop as a person. It drives me seeing the positive outcomes from my efforts and what I have created.
What are your dreams / where would you like to be in 5 years?
Having a background in fashion and garment design, mixed with a desire to help reduce pollution and cut down on our massive textile waste, it’s a big dream and a goal for me to start my own company upcycling second hand clothes.
What is the biggest issue at the moment for women which needs to be talked more about?
It baffles me that in 2019 some women are still being told, that if they dress a certain way and get assaulted, they deserve it. Another thing that saddens me is how women treat other women. We are the worst when it comes to slut-shaming, fat-shaming, etc. I hope more communities like Manchester Girl can help fight this problem, and that we in general will be become more supportive of each other.
What is your favourite Manchester Girl Event and why?
The monthly coffee meetup. It was the very first social event I attended in Manchester, and I was also on my own. The chilled vibe on a Sunday afternoon really appealed to me and everybody there was lovely and welcoming. Through the coffee meetup that first Sunday I met a couple of people in particular that have since become my closest friends in Manchester.
Why did you choose the location you were photographed?
Afflecks is my favourite place for shopping and finding new inspiration. I love the eclecticism of all the individual independent shops.
