GSN Review: High-Protein Ready Meals That Actually Taste Good

Healthy frozen ready meals aren’t usually something my family and I get excited about.

For years, they’ve sat somewhere between “last resort dinner” and “I can’t be bothered to cook” – rarely in the category of meals that actually taste good and feel good. But with more people looking for high-protein, convenient options that don’t compromise on flavour, I was curious to see if GSN could change my mind, especially after it kept coming up in conversations within the City Girl Network community.

If you haven’t come across them before, GSN (Gold Standard Nutrition) is a Yorkshire-born frozen meals company that built its reputation in independent gyms before quietly expanding into supermarkets, online, and even NHS sites. It’s one of those brands that feels like it’s grown up without losing what made people love it in the first place.

For this review, I was sent a bundle of ‘Pots of Gold’ and ‘Signature Meals’, giving me a well-rounded overview of what they’ve got to offer. That said, our members also rave about their ready cooked chicken.

GSN’s ‘Pots of Gold’

Their hero range, Pots of Gold, is where most people start. Costing just £3.99 (even less if you buy in a bundle), these are single-portion pots of 20+ frozen meals. The portion size is also spot on.

These are designed for convenience, but without the usual compromises. It’s very much that “I need something quick, but I still want to feel good after eating it” energy.

And clearly, they’re doing something right. The range has become the backbone of the brand, growing rapidly from its indie gym roots into a much wider retail audience.

What stood out most for me is that these don’t feel like diet food. They’re flavour-led first, which is exactly what you want from something you’re eating midweek when you’re tired and hungry.

They’ve taken classic meals with a healthier twist. The Chicken Chow Mein feels like a lighter, cleaner take on a classic takeaway favourite. The Chicken Macaroni Cheese & Greens leans into that comforting, nostalgic microwave meal but without the heaviness you’d usually expect.

The only one from our selection that we weren’t as hot on is the Breaded Katsu Chicken Curry. There was very little sauce, which only coated the chicken and left the rice mostly plain. Perhaps that’s a healthier way to eat it, but it didn’t work for me.

And then there’s the Chicken Arrabbiata Pasta with Red Pepper, which was easily our favourite. It’s genuinely flavourful (not just “for a healthy meal”), with a proper kick and depth that makes it feel like something you’d happily choose.

The Signature Meals

More recently, GSN has moved into something a little more elevated with its Signature Meals range.

They’re more expensive than the Pots of Gold (£6.99 per meal), placing it more in the premium night-in Charlie Bigham category.

These feel like the “end of the day” option; less grab-and-go, more sit down and properly eat. The newer dishes, like Firecracker Salmon and Sri Lankan-inspired pork curry, lean into bolder, more global flavours while still keeping that high-protein, balanced approach.

The Slow Cooked Beef Ragu was a standout; tender beef simmered for hours in a rich, tomato-based sauce that felt genuinely comforting and considered. It’s the kind of meal that feels like a treat, but without the usual heaviness you’d expect from something this indulgent.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Firecracker Salmon and Jasmine Rice brings something brighter and more vibrant. It’s zesty, fresh and carries a proper chilli kick. A great option if you like your food with a bit of heat and personality.

It’s a smart evolution of the brand. Same principles, different moment.

The brand behind it (and why it works)

Part of what makes GSN feel different is how it’s been built and how it continues to evolve.

Founder Craig Allen didn’t follow the traditional route; leaving university early to build the business from scratch, initially selling products out of a converted van before growing into a national brand without external investment

That independent mindset still shows up in how the brand operates today, particularly in how it develops new products. Through its “Chef’s Specials” model, thousands of samples are sent out to customers and ambassadors before new meals are launched, with real feedback shaping what makes it into the range. It’s a simple idea, but one that keeps the food feeling relevant and genuinely customer-led

At the same time, GSN is clearly stepping into its next phase. Expanding into retail giants like Co-op and Ocado, moving into foodservice through Compass and NHS sites, and launching collaborations with brands like Heck Chicken and Tempeh Tikka all point to a business that’s growing up without losing its original DNA.

The introduction of vegetarian options is another sign of that evolution. It’s not a pivot, but a natural expansion, widening the appeal while staying rooted in the same “healthier living” principles.

Should you buy GSN ready meals?

The Pots of Gold has to be the winning range for me. They’re quick, easy, perfectly portioned and really good value for a nutritional meal. And if you’re reading this as an Office Manager, you can get a vending machine of these delicious pots for your office.

If you’re someone who is busy, trying to eat well, and doesn’t want to sacrifice flavour for convenience, GSN feels like a genuinely solid option.

It’s not trying to reinvent food. It’s just doing the basics really well. And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.

Buy GSN from their website, at gyms and workplaces across the country, and on Ocado.
