Harriet’s of Hove Launches Plastic Free Challenge for Brighton Businesses This July
Harriet’s of Hove, proud sponsor of the Brighton Girl Community of the Year Award at this year’s Brighton Awards 2025 (won by the brilliant Co Women) is continuing their mission to create positive local impact with a call to action for businesses this summer.
With Plastic Free July around the corner, Harriet’s of Hove is challenging Brighton and Hove businesses to take the next step in sustainability: cutting out disposable plastics and embracing a smarter, circular way of working. And they’re offering the tools to make that shift simple, cost-effective, and genuinely green.
Founded by Harriet Dean-Orange in 2018, the beloved George Street shop is one of Sussex’s first zero-waste refill stores. It was born from a personal frustration: Harriet’s own difficulty finding accessible, plastic-free options during Plastic Free July that year. She set out to make it easier for others, creating a space packed with planet-friendly alternatives that support both individuals and now, increasingly, local businesses.
Today, Harriet’s of Hove is working with over 20 forward-thinking businesses—including Lost in the Lanes, The Shredquarters, The Hair Salon, The Dental Health Spa, and Little Jasmine Spa—through their Plastic Free Business Challenge. Their latest innovation? A zero-emissions e-bike delivery service bringing refillable cleaning products, sustainable snacks, and eco-conscious supplies straight to the doors of cafés, shops, studios and offices across the city.
“We’re seeing more and more workplaces asking how they can reduce their waste, be kinder to the planet, and save money at the same time,” says Harriet. “Our refill model does exactly that—and we’re here to support them every step of the way.”
The Dental Health Spa, who were also sponsors of the Brighton Girl Beauty Queen of the Year (won by Jen Turner from Turn Beautiful) is one of the brilliant businesses working with Harriets of Hove. Their founder, Christina Chatfield, adds: “Working with Harriet’s has helped us turn our sustainability values into action. Our clients notice the change — and they love it.”
The business case for sustainability is growing stronger too. With 75% of UK consumers saying they care about a company’s environmental impact, it’s clear that going green isn’t just a feel-good move—it’s a smart one.
This July, Harriet’s of Hove is inviting even more Brighton and Hove businesses to join their movement, reduce single-use plastics, and lead the way in sustainable change.
“This city is full of businesses who genuinely care,” says Harriet. “We’d love to help more of them take the next step. Whether you're a café, coworking space, studio or salon, you can make a real difference—and we’ll help you do it.”
