The Review

“Singin’ In the rain” is a 1952 American musical film offering a light-hearted perception of Hollywood in the 1920s. As I haven’t seen the film, I had no idea what to expect when I arrived MK Theatre and took my seat but I soon realised it was going to be an absolute pleasure to watch. And, what a time to see it, as it celebrates 70 years since it’s release.

For those who aren’t sure what Singin’ in the Rain is about, Set back in the 1920’s in Hollywood, a famous Don Lockwood must navigate a time where Hollywood would change forever, going from silent films to ‘talkies’ with his hilarious sidekick Cosmo Brown. It follows him on his journey from fame and fortune to falling in love with Kathy Seldon and finding a passion for dancing. Of course, it had to involve a “Villain” shall we say, Lina Lamont played by Faye Tozer (from Steps!) who did an absolute brilliant job at her role, creating a character you can’t help but love.

Expect to hear some of the classics including Good Morning, Make ‘em laugh and of course, Singin’ in the Rain. One of my favourite parts of the show was when Cosmo played by Ross McLaren did his solo in Make ‘em laugh, his bubbly energy and charisma shone through and the audience couldn’t get enough. Another great part was when all three of the main characters Don, Kathy and Cosmo were dancing to ‘Good Morning’ in the early hours, who doesn’t get all the good energy from this song? And finally, the finale left me speechless, the whole cast were on stage with their umbrellas dressed in a range of colours, “rain” was pouring from the ceiling and they genuinely looked like they were having the best time up there especially when they kicked water into the front rows (bring a poncho if you’re sitting at the front!).

It’s a show for all lovers of Hollywood, the roaring 20s and dancing. It was a show made for me, comedy, romance and all the feel-good vibes, I couldn’t think of a better way to spend an evening!
