Potts Cooking Sauces: The Ultimate Shortcut for Busy Home Cooks
Potts is the secret ingredient for those who love to cook but are strapped for time. That’s me, by the way, and pretty much every other person I spend my time with.
You’ll likely recognise this brand from the gravy aisle in the supermarkets. They’re the ones who sell ready made gravy in a small can (beef, chicken and turkey), and stock in a pint-sized one (vegetable, lamb, beef and chicken).
What I didn’t realise is that Potts also sells an array of cooking sauces too. As ‘perfect timing’ goes, these landed on my doorstep during the busiest time of my life – a sudden and unplanned house move. Giving me the ultimate smug response to those who joked that my diet must be appalling right now: “no, I’ve been living off Potts”.
For anyone who hasn’t come across the brand before, Potts is a Wiltshire-based family business that has quietly built a reputation at the premium end of the gravy and stock market. Their products are designed to replicate that slow-cooked, Sunday-roast flavour you’d normally only get from hours simmering away in a kitchen. It’s why their chicken gravy in particular has become something of a cult favourite among home cooks who want depth of flavour without making everything from scratch.
Potts Cooking Sauces
Potts Cooking Sauces range from a tomato-rich Ragu Alla Calebrese Pasta Sauce, to a spicy Mexican Pibil Fajita Sauce to a whole range of fragrant curry sauces from Thailand, Indonesia and Japan.
As if the innovative gravy cans weren’t enough to prove it, you can’t accuse this brand of being bland and boring. Every single sauce packs a punch. The heat from the Thai Red Curry made my eyes water and my mouth say “woah”. The spicy curry lover in our house has since bought another from our local supermarket.
The Korma Curry is spicier than a standard takeaway Korma, with a lingering heat. For me, it was the perfect balance of creamy coconut and warm garam masala. The spicy curry lover gave it a thumbs up, too, after adding some extra chilly flakes.
This is the thing with Potts Cooking Sauces; it can spread to a four person meal and modified to fit everyone’s taste. The perfect family meal, as the marketing department should pitch.
My Potts Staple Items
Potts chicken stock and gravy cans were already a staple on my shelf. Although I’m now debating swapping the chicken gravy for a beef one after it topped off a delicious roast a few weeks ago.
For me, I find chicken stock to be the most versatile for simple paella’s, potato pies, soups and casseroles. It’s light, salty and brings out the flavour of every dish.
As far as cooking sauces go, the Neapolitan Puttanesca Sauce is my favourite. Move aside Lloyd Grossman, I’ve got a new staple pasta sauce on my “rushed eats” shelf.
The Katsu Curry with coconut cream, tamari and yuzu juice is also joining the pack, along with the Mexican Enchilada Mole Sauce.
Should you buy Potts Stocks, Gravy and Cooking Sauces?
Yes, absolutely. Be wary if you’re not a spice lover – the curry’s all love a chilly. But these truly are a great way to eat well when you’re pressed for time.
