REVIEW

The Commitments is based on the novel of the same name written by Roddy Doyle, taking a trip into the late 80’s in Dublin. Opening Act 1 on a Xmas scene of our main character, full of bravado.. And alcohol - wailing (in tune) the classic, Proud Mary. Singing to his heart's content we are introduced to this slightly arrogant character, Deco (played by Ian McIntosh), but also to this musical's introduction for an evening jam packed full of tunes.

The tale begins with the retelling of the creation of the band, The Commitments - forming the ‘hardest working band in showbusiness’ led by Jimmy played by James Killeen. Adding band members one by one, we end with a rat pack of misfits with mismatching personalities leading the audience to wonder if they will even make it to their first live performance without splitting up.

Our final character, a rather randy Joey ‘The Lips’ provides the group with his garage for their rehearsals - and the tale splits its time between there and back in Jimmy’s childhood home with his Da (played by Nigel Pivaro) who supports Jimmy with witty anecdotes and support.

Ultimately, the star of this show is the music and although the story lightly details the struggles of a working class Dublin - the focus is definitely on adding a Irish twist onto some soul classics including Proud Mary, Mustang Sally & River Deep, Mountain High.

It was definitely a brilliant choice to escape the classic UK weather outside and brought a smile to everyone's face watching and bopping along.

Unmissable if the music is your focus for a musical.

Standout Quote or Moment: The megamix of hits at the end of the show

See If: You appreciate a stand out vocalist and good hearty tunes

Similar Plays: Once the Musical, Footloose

Last Impression: An energetic rendition of Sunday morning classics to leave you feeling high spirited and ready to take on the world
