Review

A Broadway and West End hit, this musical rendition of a childhood classic is a whole lotta fun! The show is technical whilst not taking itself too seriously; whilst you’re not going to mistake the costumes and set design for the real Far Far Away, the simple nature of the show adds to its panto-esque vibe.

The performance showcases lots of talented cast members and, even with a large ensemble, many of the cast play multiple characters. In fact, the quick costume and makeup changes are rather impressive!

As a result of the larger and multi-talented cast, we are given all of our nostalgic fairytale characters, Farquad’s knights, backing dancers and more!

Some of the cast put their own spin on the characters which really brings the performance to life. Some honourable mentions include Pinocchio’s eccentric energy and Lord Farquad’s flamboyant demeanour. It’s nice to see something new added to a story which we know so well.

Kudos must be paid to Joanna Clifton’s portrayal of Fiona! She brought so much energy to the role and made Fiona a multi-dimensional character; she was fiery, fun and unapologetically herself. And boy, can she sing!!!

Act One starts by introducing us to a young ogre who sets out to make a life on his own. We’re introduced to this fairy tale land through the use of projection and simplistic set design. The stage is made slightly smaller due to the set design so, whilst you’ll have a perfectly good view from the Stalls, the view might be limited in the Gods or boxes.

The most impressive set is showcased when Shrek and Donkey meet the infamous dragon. The lair is dark and eerie; the dragon is portrayed both by a large, dominating, puppet which moves like water and an individual cast member who knows how to belt a ballad!

Act Two throws us back in as Shrek and Fiona strike up an expected friendship that continues to flourish into something more. We see lots of fun musical numbers in the second Act and, of course, a big dance number for Joanna Clifton to show off those Strictly moves!

As we reach the classic Happily Ever After, the audience starts dancing and clapping along to The Monkees’ I’m A Believer. Overall, the show is easy-going, family friendly and nostalgic. If you want a taste of those famous lines (do you know the muffin man? That’ll do Donkey! And more!) then it is one to watch.

The show is running until the 27th of August so grab your ticket soon!

Standout Quote or Moment: performance of I Know It’s Today!

See If: you can quote some of the famous lines!

Similar Plays: Mother Goose, classic pantos without the audience participation!

Last Impression: A fun-filled rendition of a classic children’s stor, giving it another lease of life!
