Review
The devil is in the detail and this is a triumph of using simplistic set and sound to create a nail biting experience that sits with you for days on end afterwards.
Lights up on Red Ropes Theatres latest star: The Fall of the House of Usher. Previous works include ‘Dracula’, ‘Turn of the Screw’, & ‘A Christmas Carol’. Set at the Arnos Vale Cemetery, a more perfect location could not have been chosen - with the icy fog all around and full moon illuminating all the graves - it was spectacularly spooky before we even headed indoors to take our seats.
This atmosphere was complimented by the acting prowess of our trio: Edgar by Patrick McAndrew, Madeline by Rebecca Robson & Roderick by Danann McAleer as we are introduced to a Edgar Allen Poe classic adapted to the stage by Matt Grinter. What follows is a tale of two stories; the naivety of children and the vulnerability of the adults left behind in this seemingly cursed house.
The ultimate success of this piece lies in the atmospheric soundscape - created by Oliver Thomas which highlighted every nuance and timed to perfection by the actors. However, at times audio was lost from the actors due to the acoustics of the space.
Perfect for a spooky evening of tense and dramatic gothic horror. Another success from Red Rope Theatre.
The show is running until the 6th December so grab your ticket soon!
