‘I Bet You’d Look Good in a Coffin’ is the second book by Katy Brent which features, anti-heroine, Kitty Collins. The first book is titled ‘How to Kill Men and Get Away With It’ which was published in 2022. As a brief synopsis, Kitty Collins has a knack for ending the lives of those who abuse and hurt others and would likely, otherwise, have gotten away with it.

At the beginning of the book, we learn that Kitty has vowed to stop killing. She has a great relationship with her boyfriend, Charlie, she has strong friendships and she is attending a support group for angry women. However, a misogynistic social media personality that goes by the name of Blaze Bundy is making her life, and new found pacifism, difficult.

Kitty soon discovers that her mother is getting married and preparations for the wedding are underway in France. Whilst abroad for the wedding, it unfolds that Blaze Bundy is closer than ever and posing a direct threat to Kitty and her loved ones. I am trying desperately to avoid spoilers so I will simply pose the following questions: will Kitty be able to maintain abstinence from killing? Who really is Blaze Bundy? Has Kitty misjudged those she is close to?

The reader is introduced to several characters throughout the book - all of the characters are rather likeable, however, the book has a quick pace which hinders considerable character depth and background. Albeit, I have not read Katy Brent’s first book, mentioned above, so it may be that the characters are explored further there.

Nevertheless, I didn’t actually find that I was at a disadvantage not having read the first installment of this anti-heroine. The plot of the first book is set out within the first few chapters of the second. If anything was not spelled out for me, I found it fairly easy to plug the gaps.

As expected for the genre, there are a few engaging twists throughout. I guessed one of the twists on my second attempt so I must give points for not having guessed it on the first go…but I do like a twist that I cannot preempt at all! I will say that the plot is quite far-fetched. I don’t think that is surprising for many crime/thrillers but I was taken out of the story at times due to finding it too hard to believe.

Overall, the book was an easy read with clear themes and interesting characters. I’ll be keeping an eye out for the next instalment…

Read if: you like a dark and comedic thriller with a strong female protagonist!
