CGN Wardrobe Edit: January 2021
City Girl Networks monthly fashion and beauty edit, curating some of our favourite products from the brands we love…
‘New year, new me’ is a resounding theme each January, as we all speed into the new version of ourselves we think will be healthier and better. This year though there has been a shift in the moto taking us into 2021, and I am here for it! New Year- Same me. I love this moto because especially when it comes to our wardrobes, It’s easy to get into the thought pattern that by buying different clothes, changing your style that you will, in turn, change yourself.
You’re wrong. Anyone who has ever bought a full yoga set before actually doing a yoga class in the hopes that putting it on will suddenly, magically, bring forth the hidden yogi inside, knows that is not the case. Hardly worn, this set is still folded up in a drawer somewhere or worse, now used for Netflix binges and stretchy pants for that post-Chinese takeaway bloating.
The only time I would ever advocate for changing and style updating your wardrobe in January is if in the months previously you have done a wardrobe purge, style quizzes, created mood boards on Pinterest and identified key pieces you need, bookmarked them online and saved up- and which in the January sale it would make sense to purchase- it also means you won’t be as easily swept up into the adrenaline of bagging a bargain in the sales.
My theme for January is long-lasting comfort. You want pieces that are going to last, not just through the years but also through your week- taking you from comfort at home to weekday working at the dining table, to bubbly with your bubble.
If you’re still after some January inspiration, here is my round-up of pieces any wardrobe would be happy to have.
Sweaty Betty Power Gym leggings- £75
If you struggle with adding a daring pop of colour to your wardrobe, try experimenting with your workout gear. For all the joking above of not getting use out of yoga pants, if you need a new pair or want to step up your game with the right clothing and catch the motivational wave that is January, look no further.
Sweaty Betty is a market leader for a reason, comfortable, stylish and long-lasting. These are available in lots of different colours, including classics like black and dark blue. For those who fancy injecting some colour, these bright tie-dye pink leggings are perfect.
& Other stories black yoga bra top- £35
This quick-dry, seamless yoga bra top is a great workout staple for everyone. With increased support and flexibility, this is stretchy and comfortable- the fact it is quick-dry also means you can get in a workout at your local park and not feel hot and sweaty the entire time home.
It comes in black and Khaki- both colours I would happily purchase. When in doubt, go for the black. It means you can pair it with bright/ patterned yoga pants like the ones above and it still looks like a clean, put together set. No mismatch of colour or print, which means more wearable and less thinking time when wondering what to wear.
Net- A- Porter Veja White Trainer- £90
If you haven’t already got a white trainer in your arsenal then have a think about it. I love Veja and am personally eyeing up their trainers when my current pair start looking a bit worse for wear.
With impressive ethical credentials- This pair is made from smooth leather and set on rubber soles responsibly sourced from the Amazon rainforest, these are a brand to bookmark.
Depop TopShop Pale Pink Jumper £9
This particular listing on Depop is for a size 8 pale pink jumper from Topshop. Used but in excellent condition, for £9 you can’t go wrong! If this isn’t your size or style, I searched ‘Pale Pink Jumper’ and there were so many great options available.
Pale pink is a lovely colour for the new year, it’s also going to be seen a lot more in shops over the next few months as pastels show their face around spring time- so be ahead of the trend and snap up a bargain!
Next Dark Blue Slim Jeans- £24
Everyone should own the following: One pair of black jeans (see December wardrobe edit), one pair of light wash denim jeans, and one pair of dark blue jeans in different cuts. These three are the basics of every wardrobe, especially if you’re looking to build a strong foundation for a capsule wardrobe.
You can’t go wrong with Next jeans, both long-lasting and affordable, these dark blue slim jeans aren’t just going to carry you through the seasons, they are going to last you years- look after your jeans to get more life in them by only washing them when they absolutely need it.
Reiju Rose Quartz Heart Necklace- £12.99
We all need a little bit of magic in our lives, and whether you believe in the power of crystals or not, this is a lovely piece to add to your everyday jewellery collection. Rose Quartz is the stone of unconditional love and infinite peace- both of which we could all use after 2020.
If you do believe- Rose Quartz is the crystal that helps you love yourself and encourages self-forgiveness and acceptance. Go into 2021 wearing a necklace that is all about self-trust and self-worth. If you don’t believe it, then you have a beautiful heart-shaped necklace that can remind you when you wear it that you love yourself too.
Skin Science Essential Daily Routine Box- £140
If 2020 possibly brought us one good thing, it was a new appreciation for good skincare. Maskne is real, and a year of no makeup has seen a lot of us embrace our natural skin and give it a new lease of life! Appreciating and investing in high-quality skincare should be at the top of your list of new year investments.
Skin Science is a new range, with only four products it narrows down choice to only the essentials- perfect if you’re a newbie to what is very much an overwhelming world of skincare. The daily routine box consists of all four of the products for a discounted price, but you can also purchase each one of them separately. Included is a Glyclocic wash (cleanser), a Vitamin C serum, a lightweight hydrating SPF 50 cream (what should be a daily essential to everyone’s routine!) and a retinol serum for use in your pre-bedtime routine.
Tip Of The Month:
Look on sites like Depop, ebay and online Oxfam when you know exactly what you’re looking for. Not only can items be a lot cheaper, but you’re also championing ethical purchase practice- I just bagged myself a vintage Ralph Lauren jumper in dark grey for £23 from Depop!
