Snack Review: Crunch Corn

Flavoured baked corn snacks are having moment. Especially if they’re the Popcorn Kitchen’s Crunch Corn Spicy Chilli ones that made its way through my letterbox.

We love Popcorn Kitchen at the City Girl Network. They’ve provided the snacks for numerous events; dividing our attendees to Team Cheddar Cheese and Team White Chocolate and Raspberry with their “classic” flavoured popcorn options. Co-founder, Louise Monk, has also been interviewed for our magazine, where she offered brilliant advice to the food and drink entrepreneurs in our community.

The most cited being: “It doesn’t matter if you’re contemplating joining a cluttered category because nothing stands still and if you have a distinct USP you can still secure meaningful cut-through.”

Shifting from flavoursome popcorn to roasted peruvian giant corn is the logical next step for the Popcorn Kitchen journey. A journey that began in 2012 selling ‘freshly popped’ popcorn from a mobile popcorn kettle on the Surrey food festival circuit.

Eleven years and multiple award-winning popcorn flavours later, Louise found a new love with Peruvian Giant ‘Choclo’ corn in a bar in Seville. Three years from that, she’s developed her own Popcorn Kitchen version that survived around 3 minutes in my house.

We were sent all three of their 100g sharing bags, available in Salt and Vinegar, Spicy Chilli and Sea Salt. All generously seasoned, heavy on the crunch and devilishly moorish.

The Spicy Chilli lasted the least amount of time; the true way to work out which flavour we liked best. Paired perfectly with a white wine or a lime and soda.

Any fans of the artisan salt and vinegar crisp (the ones that go wild on the vinegar) will love the Crunch Corn rendition. Similarly, the Sea Salt flavour is comparable that of a high quality crisp; Crunch Corn simply wins on the “healthy(er) factor”.

There are so many benefits to Crunch Corn as a snack over other baked salty delights. Notably, they’re high in fibre and don’t contact the “classic” allergens (i.e. nuts, gluten and lactose). As their marketing says it “looks like a nut, crunches like a nut, but is not a nut”.

They’re certainly a snack that pubs, bars and picnic planners would be smart to add to their stock – as farm shops, cinemas, gift shops, hamper curators, deli's and lifestyle retailers are doing all over the UK.
