Writer Of The Month - An Interview With Lauren Waugh

City Girl Magazine is home to over 200 volunteer writers and editors who give their time to help us create content for this amazing platform. We want to celebrate the exemplary writers who have shown dedication to the magazine, as well as helping to build resources and masterclasses for our Volunteers Hub. The magazine truly wouldn’t be what it is without their hard work and creativity.

Our Writer of the Month for August is Lauren Waugh, let’s get to know her a little better…

Name: Lauren Waugh

Age: 26

Occupation: Kitchen Designer

City: Newcastle

Social media: @_lifeoflkw

When and Why did you join City Girl Magazine as a volunteer?

I joined City Girl in January 2021. A friend from my Master’s course who had been an editor suggested getting involved. I wanted to develop my portfolio. I’m a really curious person and loved the idea of interviewing people who inspired me but had very little experience of this.

I sent an email with an idea for a series of interviews to City Girl and was so excited to get an email back from the editor saying they liked my idea.

What do you love the most about volunteering for City Girl as a Content Creator?

I’ve loved the incredible people I have got to meet. The people I have interviewed have been such inspiring and determined people. Talking to them definitely gives me a massive dose of drive when I get off the call.

I’m really privileged that a lot of my previous interviewees have stayed in touch too, by supporting my other interviews and giving me further opportunities. Not only have I built my confidence but my network too.

Tell us more about what you enjoy writing about…

I see myself as a storyteller so I love interviews where we talk about the journey. I think it’s just as important to talk about the failures as well as the successes. I love hearing stories where people I admire have picked themselves up and tried again. It’s something we can all learn from.

What topics are you looking forward to working on in the future?

I’m working on a slow fashion series at the moment and I'm really excited to see people’s reactions to the look books and video content. It’s completely new for me, but I love fashion and I have had a lot of fun dressing up in my back garden for this.

What is your favourite article in the magazine?

I love horoscopes so I do enjoy the monthly tarot reading and I really enjoyed founder Pippa’s article about friendship in building City Girl.

If you had to pick your top two articles, which you have published, what would they be?

It’s a really hard question. I had the best day at the By Rotation IRL Experience at Westfields so that would definitely be top 3.

I also really enjoyed interviewing Poonam Dhuffer from YSM8. It was such an emotional interview and I think we were both in awe of how far YSM8 had come by the end.
