Travel Diaries: Shepherd’s Hut Experience, Wales

If I have learnt anything these past few years, it is to seek out and embrace new opportunities. Stepping out of my comfort zone, exploring the unusual and discovering unique experiences that create the best memories. So with that in mind, read on to find out why Shepherd’s Huts are the new must-try!

On a headland in west Wales, I stood with an enormous grin on my face. Before me lay the greenest, most manicured field, cream yurts and deep blue huts scattered amongst swaths of wildflowers. It was simply adorable! The cutest cart helped me transport my luggage to my abode for 2 nights and the perfect, autumnal trip began.

At Headland Escape, shepherd’s huts offer compact, yet luxurious accommodation for a weekend break. The timber-framed windows and door beckoned me inside to a very comfortable living-sleeping-and-cooking area, complete with a delightful log fire to stave off the autumn chill.

With prosecco resting in the fridge and Welshcakes to nibble as I took in the view, it was the perfect slice of escapism. Heading out along the coastal path, a bracing clifftop walk provided amazing views across the rocky bays and my first encounter with a slow worm (actually a legless lizard) lurking in the grass!

Nearby, the village of Manorbier takes a step back in time, hosting a Norman castle (with parts first built in the 12th century) proudly standing atop a hill overlooking the beach. The area is definitely a walker’s paradise.

Tenby was also a short drive away and would have been lovely – if not for the torrential rain! Nonetheless, I ploughed on, wandering the colourful harbour-front and quaint streets before taking a break from the weather in a café. What could be better than a rich cup of coffee and warming toastie as you watch the rain pour outside? Well… not having to brave the rain after you’ve dried off!

Back at the hut, as the evening drew in, it was time to start the best experience of all – firing up the log-burning hot tub for a night under the stars. After an hour’s wait to fill the tub, including a well-timed trip for dinner at the local tavern, the fire slowly built up the temperature. Kudos to my boyfriend for being an excellent fire stoker and mixing the water like a Venetian gondolier.

I’m not going to lie, it took two hours to get warm enough, by which time it was pitch black. However, it couldn’t have been more perfect. Out in the middle of nowhere, with no light pollution, my eyes adjusted to the dark and the Milky Way was revealed. Stars filled the sky, brighter and more numerous than I had ever seen and absolutely stunning. Satellites whizzed by, a reminder of the human presence in space. It was absolutely magical!

I couldn’t have loved the trip more - being at one with nature but having the luxury of cosy living quarters really made this a trip to remember.

I hope you have been inspired to try a shepherd’s hut experience - I wholeheartedly recommend it! Don’t forget to share your adventures with us at City Girl Network and wherever you go – happy travelling!
