City Girl Reviews: Craft and Crumb Baking Kits

With the overload of zoom parties this year, I know I’m not the only one who has zoom fatigue. When it comes to celebrating with loved ones, or just changing up the typical chat over a screen with friends it’s fun to change things up. Craft and Crumb sent us a couple of baking kits through the post to host our very own baking party.

Product we reviewed: Birthday Mug Cake Celebration box: £9.95. Feeling like the Queen we came together one evening to create our birthday cake in a mug and celebrate our second birthdays of the year (a repeating event I could get behind!) and have a laugh on a cold wintery evening.

Alice, City Girl Network Food & Drink Editor:

These kits are simple and easy to use- foodies who love to bake already may be after more of a challenge- but it was a fun evening and I would 100% recommend these to friends with kids. It's cute and fun and let's face it kids love sweet things.

As this mug cake had to be made in a microwave- I don’t actually own a microwave- the baking party for me was a little less fun. I had to make mine earlier and put it in the oven so I could try it with Natalie and Rachael during the zoom party.

Natalie, City Girl Network Business Development Coordinator & Founder of Milkstash Magazine:

I loved how easy the instructions were to follow, and that it means these would make a great party kit for 1st time bakers or as an activity for kids. Using a kit like this would be a great way to cook as a group while still having fun without the pressure of getting it right- and I loved the party horn included in this box!

The quality of the end result was pretty basic, and it’s a shame the finishing touches like the suggested icing were up to the individual to get the ingredients for and make, but I did like that there were instructions on how to make it should you want to have a go.

Rachael, City Girl Network Editor & COO:

The birthday mug cake was simple and easy to make- not much baking actually required as you cook it in the microwave, but I can 100% see the appeal in this if you’re cooking with a young one as their attention spans are pretty short. The letterbox size packaging was efficient, and I loved the extras that came with the kit- a candle, balloon and party horn.

I’m keen to have another go at a different kit, the mini gingerbread biscuit kit (£7.95)would be really fun to do with my two young cousins who I won’t be able to see this year. If I am still on lockdown next year for my birthday, I’d definitely try the Rainbow Cupcake Baking Party Box (£100) which is sent to you and 5 other friends for a zoom baking party.

Final verdict?

A great conversation piece for those who are separated and want to spend time together doing something a bit different and fun. The perfect Christmas activity for a young family member, especially if you aren’t able to see them over the holidays. Either as a Christmas gift, or get yourself one too and have a baking party with them!
