Writer Of The Month - An Interview With Florence Edwards

City Girl Magazine is home to over 200 volunteer writers and editors who give their time to help us create content for this amazing platform. We want to celebrate the exemplary writers who have shown dedication to the magazine, as well as helping to build resources and masterclasses for our Volunteers Hub. The magazine truly wouldn’t be what it is without their hard work and creativity.

Our Writer of the Month for September is Florence, let’s get to know her a little better…

WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN CITY GIRL MAGAZINE AS A VOLUNTEER?

I joined City Girl Magazine all the way back in August 2018! To be completely honest, at the time I wanted to study English literature and thought the experience might look good on my application form. Although I did make it onto - and eventually finished - my literature degree, I loved volunteering at the magazine so much that I stayed!

The magazine has grown so much over the years, and so has my confidence as a writer - I would never have been brave enough to set up my own freelancing business without the opportunities City Girl has given me.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT VOLUNTEERING FOR CITY GIRL AS A CONTENT CREATOR?

The community! Freelance writing can be very solitary, so I love being part of a supportive, knowledgeable, all-round wonderful community of writers and editors.

TELL US MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU ENJOY WRITING ABOUT…

I mostly write for the Books section, edited by the lovely Jenna, and sometimes dip my toe into other Entertainment articles. As a huge bookworm, having a platform to share my latest bookish obsessions is amazing!

I also think books have a major role to play in social change, so my reviews often come from a feminist / decolonising / general social justice angle.

WHAT TOPICS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING ON IN THE FUTURE?

I’m always trying to read more diversely, so I’m looking forward to reviewing lots more books with great diversity and representation!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ARTICLE IN THE MAGAZINE?

Fellow Bristol Girl Laura Pick wrote an article on How to Utilise The Power of Choice and it’s honestly the best introduction to living more consciously!

IF YOU HAD TO PICK YOUR TOP THREE ARTICLES, WHICH YOU HAVE PUBLISHED, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

Bristol Girl Book Group Reads: Me & White Supremacy

5 Unmissable Bookshops in Bristol & Bath

5 Non-Fiction Books To Fortify Your Feminism This International Women's Day!
