Here Comes the Sun - Sunscreens For All Skin Types

As an Australian who grew up on the Gold Coast, it was always quite funny to watch the Brits get so excited about every little ray that peeks out from behind the clouds. However, after my sixth Winter here, I can firmly state that I am indeed getting very excited about every little ray that peeks out from behind the clouds.

We have always been told to add sunscreen to our morning routines before makeup every day, no matter the season. But now more than ever, as it starts to heat up and the sunshine is around for longer each day, it is imperative that we all re-address our sunscreen routine.

That tinted moisturiser containing SPF15 may have done the trick throughout the Winter, but it won’t be sufficient now.

As our lockdown restrictions slowly start to lift, we can now enjoy time in the sun with our friends in the park and in pub gardens.

While we all need around 10 minutes per day of sun exposure for optimum vitamin D intake, any longer than this without appropriate protection and you risk sunburn, along with all the negatives that come with prolonged exposure to UVA and UVB rays.

Confused about the different types of products? You’re not alone. With so many on the market, it’s not always as simple as choosing the one that’s on offer. Generally sunscreens come with either mineral or chemical filters, each with their own set of pro’s and con’s.

Mineral sunscreens will usually be thicker, and very bright white in colour - they will contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, and will provide a physical barrier between the UVA and UVB rays, and your skin.

They are great for sensitive types as they are not absorbed by the skin, though the downside of using mineral sun protection is the ‘grey’ appearance they can sometimes leave, especially on darker skin tones.

Chemical sunscreens will blend away like a morning moisturiser, on application. They work by absorbing the UVA and UVB rays, so that they cannot damage the skin. For those who suffer from a more sensitive skin, these sunscreens can cause irritation, but on the plus side, they shouldn’t leave you with an ashen grey face.

Once you’ve decided what filters are going to be best for your skin, there are other factors that can help you decide on the product you purchase. It is always recommended that you opt for a factor 50 cream and apply about as much as you would your moisturiser, not forgetting the ears, neck or backs of hands.

The Heliocare 360 range is a popular choice. Most of their sunscreens contain a mix of both mineral and chemical filters, and you can choose from a variety of formats - including gels, creams and sprays, with dewy or matte finishes - making it the perfect option for oily, dry, combination or normal skin. Their products are vegan and work well under makeup all day.

If you suffer with sensitive skin, try the La Roche Posay Anthelios Invisible Spray SPF50+. A brand well known for catering to those prone to irritation, this sunscreen feels lightweight but is water-resistant, so great for those who are sweating or in the water, and needing to quickly reapply throughout the day.

During these trying times, it is so important to continue to support local British business. If you’re on the market for something new, try Saltee Skincare. All of their products are vegan and they also utilise upcycled packaging.

Another British brand, who specialises in no-fuss, unisex products, is gruum. They have a face and a body sunscreen with SPF50, which has been created by dermatologists, is hypoallergenic, water-resistant and easily absorbed by the skin. They also offer a subscription service which can save you a few pounds too.

If you’re wanting your sunscreen to work a little harder for you whilst protecting your skin, try the Vitamin Infused Face Protector, from Vitamin Injections London. As the name suggests, this sunscreen is packed full of goodness for your skin, such as Vitamins C and E, as well as hyaluronic acid for hydration.

Whatever option you choose, ensure you are applying an ample amount after your morning skincare routine, so you’re all set for the day. Then go out and enjoy the sunshine!
