Review

Laylo was created for wine lovers, by wine lovers. They work directly with small scale producers to source the best wines and package them up in beautifully adorned boxes.

But isn’t box wine just for cheap wine? Not always. Laylo is doing things differently. Placing wine into bottles wastes thousands of kgs of unnecessary carbon and over 600 million bottles of wine are poured away every year because it simply isn’t being consumed fast enough. The Lauras behind Laylo aim to make great wine inclusive, and better for the environment.

Boxes use less energy to produce, are easier to ship as they can be packed side by side, don’t need plastic to keep them from smashing and aren’t as heavy, plus the wine in a box lasts 6 weeks once opened so less is thrown away.

Lot #7: Toscana

The team at Laylo kindly sent me a box of their newest wine, the Toscana which is made from Sangiovese and Merlot grapes.

The wine is produced by Valerio Marconi, who has been producing wine since he was a teenager. He’s passionate about the wines of Tuscany and owns top quality Sangiovese vineyards in the Medieval town of Radda.

The gorgeous box is decorated with images from Brunelleschi’s Dome in the gothic Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, a piece of art from the region where the wine is produced.

This was a smooth, drinkable wine with savoury edges. My friends and I drank the entire box in a single sitting over dinner and board games one evening (oops!) I believe the speed at which we drank this box that’s meant to last 6 weeks definitely proves how much of an easy drinker this is.

Not being much of a wine buff, the tasting notes suggest this has elements of raspberries and redcurrants, balsamic vinegar, and sweet tobacco. It’s savoury with a “lick of acidity”. Whatever the notes, it was very tasty and smooth.

In Summary

Luxury boxed wine sourced from small producers.

For fans of: A glass of wine who never finishes a whole bottle.

Perfect for: Dinner and drinks at home.
