5 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Do at Your Local Library (from a library assistant!)
“And besides, libraries aren't just about books. They are one of the few public spaces we have left which don't like our wallets more than us.”
― Matt Haig, Notes on a Nervous Planet
If I asked you to picture a library, what would come to mind? A frowning old librarian behind a stack of dusty books? An intimidating silence? Vehement hushing if you raise your voice above a whisper?
These stereotypes, if they were ever true, no longer hold for modern public libraries. Nowadays, libraries are about so much more than just books – they offer key services and provide a vibrant space that everyone in the community is welcome to enjoy.
The best way you can support your local library is to use it! Here are just a few ideas for how to make the most of the services on offer.
1. INTER-LIBRARY LOANS
Okay, so I said this was going to be about more than books…but lots of people don’t know about inter-library loans! If you’re bingeing a series and are desperate for the next book, finding that your local library doesn’t have any copies might be disappointing. But don’t give up yet!
Ask a member of staff and they’ll be happy to order the book in from another library that has it in stock. There may be a small fee depending on your local authority but if so it’s minimal, around £1. This service means that even the smallest libraries can offer you a lot of choice!
2. MAKE FRIENDS
Libraries are often the hub of a community, providing the much-needed human connection that we’ve all missed in lockdown.
From craft clubs to relaxed coffee mornings, there are plenty of opportunities to meet like-minded people. Have a look at your local library’s website/social media or pop in and ask about upcoming events.
3. VOLUNTEER
One thing I think many people have gained from lockdown is a stronger sense of community. If you would like to give back, ask about volunteering opportunities at your local library – whatever your skills and however much time you can spare.
You could deliver books to people with reduced mobility, help to run a book group or teach basic computer skills in community classes.
4. LISTEN TO FREE AUDIOBOOKS
This is one service I didn’t know about until I started working in libraries, and I wish I had discovered it sooner! I’ve introduced all my family members to it as well and they’re hooked.
Audiobooks are a fantastic way to read more and take the tedium out of everyday chores, but they can also be dreadfully expensive. With a library card, you can access an app such as BorrowBox or Libby to borrow audiobooks completely free!
There are a multitude of genres to explore, from edge-of-your-seat crime thrillers to inspiring non-fiction. In fact, all of the audiobooks featured in my article ‘Top 10 Non-Fiction Audiobooks to Brighten Your Day’ were chosen because they are widely available from these platforms.
“Audiobooks have given me a new lease of life.” - My Mum!
5. STAY AND CHILL!
As lockdown measures relax further, many of us will be looking to escape the confines of our homes. Do you need a space to get some work done, finally start researching that project or simply chill and read a book? Don’t want to be endlessly ordering coffees because you’re embarrassed for staying in the café so long?
Libraries are super-welcoming spaces so come and say hello!
