Book Review: The Girl I Used To Be By Mary Torjussen

Rating: ★★★★

Genre: Psychological Thriller

What is ‘The Girl I Used To Be’ about?

Next up from my mini book haul was The Girl I Used to Be, which had pulled me in with an alluring cover. “How can you fix your worst mistake if you don’t remember it?”, the cover reads, and the novel itself features a married woman called Gemma who escapes her stressful day-to-day life with a work getaway.

She is joined by a charming new gentleman for an innocent dinner - but the next morning she has no memory of the night and he has vanished. With an unknown enemy wanting to bring her down at every turn and a family she is fighting to protect, she uncovers shocking secrets about her past.

City Girl Book Review

Perhaps I enjoyed this book so much because the mystique persists throughout the entire novel with the protagonist knowing just as little as the reader. It also gave a realistic outlook on the pressures of career and marriage in adult life.

Either way, if you like a good psychological thriller then it is worth picking this one up and you can buy it on Amazon or on Audible here.

Favourite Quote: “And suddenly I was sick of it. Sick of taking the blame for something that had been done to me years before. ‘It hasn’t happened because of me!’ I shouted back. ‘I was asleep.’”

Read If: If you like strong and assertive female leads, then maybe this book is the one for you!

Made Me Think: This book really made me reflect on survivor’s guilt - but also just how desperate we are to blame someone or something when bad things happen.
