5 Ways To Easily Embrace Plastic Free July

Whilst we all should really be looking to reduce our waste all year round, July is pegged as the month when everyone should be playing their part.

The global movement, Plastic Free July, encourages millions to refuse single-use plastic throughout the month, with the hope that those involved will continue their zero-waste learnings far beyond the end of July.

From swapping your usual basics with the likes of plastic-free deodorants or partaking in some zero-waste shopping, there are plenty of ways to get involved with this sustainable movement.

Here are some easy swaps to help you move closer to a zero-waste lifestyle:

  1. Start off in the bathroom

The bathroom is often one of the worst culprits within the home when it comes to plastic waste - almost everything comes in tubs and tubes, but they don't have to.

Plastic-free toothpaste can come in the form of jellies or tabs (Lush has some great options starting at £6).

Perhaps a bit more well-known, plastic free shampoos and shower gels can come in the form of zero-waste bars (check out Gruum’s sustainable bars, which are currently on sale).

2. Staying sustainable in the sun

With another heat wave predicted for July (fingers crossed), let’s take a closer look at the sunscreen we buy.

People often forget about their SPF adding to their plastic consumption, especially when it’s not used on a daily basis. Zero waste sunscreen is a revolution, offering a sun protectant that keeps both the skin and planet safe. We love the planet are donating a £1 for every eco-friendly SPF sold to Just One Ocean.

3. Refill, Refill, Refill

They’re popping up everywhere, and Refill stores aren’t going anywhere soon. Now found as independent stores or as pop-ups in some larger grocery store chains, a refill station encourages you to bring your own container and pay for products without the packaging.

You can find everything from foods, to toiletries, to baked goods at these sustainable stores.

Not only is this way of shopping better for the planet, it reduces food waste and saves money, as you’re only buying the amounts you need. Only need 125g of fusilli for a new pasta recipe you wanted to try? No bother.

4. Waste in the workplace

If you’re looking for ways to reduce waste at work, it’s all about pre-planning. Many office bins are full of disposable takeaway cups and meal deal sandwich boxes, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

To go plastic-free at the office, come prepared with a reusable coffee mug and a pre-prepared packed lunch. Bringing your own food will also save you some pennies, and using your own cup at some coffee shops will even bag you a sweet little discount.

5. Zero waste hydration

Similar to the coffee shop hack, bringing a reusable water bottle is a super easy way to cut down your single-use plastic.

Most establishments should offer tap water for free, so get creative with it and treat yourself to a durable water bottle that dons your favourite pattern or motif.

With just a few weeks left of the zero-waste campaign, are you going to give these plastic-free tips a go? One simple swap at a time is all it takes to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.
